JOHANNESBURG, July 29 – Valterra Platinum, the world’s largest platinum producer by value, reported a more than 1,600% increase in half-year profit, driven by stronger platinum group metals (PGM) prices alongside a significant recovery in production and sales volumes.

For the six months ended 30 June, the South African miner reported headline earnings per share of 82.02 rand, compared with 4.73 rand during the corresponding period last year.

The company said earnings benefited from an 85% increase in platinum group metals prices, while higher sales volumes reflected the recovery in production at its Amandelbult mining complex following flooding-related disruptions experienced in 2025.

Refined platinum group metals output rose by 25% year on year to approximately 1.742 million ounces, while sales volumes increased 18% to 1.737 million ounces during the reporting period.

Although platinum prices have retreated from the record highs reached earlier this year, market conditions remained supportive of earnings. Spot platinum had climbed above $2,900 per ounce in late January before easing in recent months.

Reflecting the stronger financial performance, Valterra declared an interim dividend of 57 rand per share, a substantial increase from the 2 rand per share paid during the same period last year.

The results underscore the improving outlook for South Africa’s platinum sector as higher commodity prices and recovering operational performance continue to strengthen profitability across the industry, despite ongoing volatility in global precious metals markets.
