LAGOS, Aug 15 – Resolute Mining has formed a joint venture with Guinea’s state-backed Nimba Mining Gold to advance gold exploration and potential development projects in the West African country, as Guinea seeks to expand its mining sector beyond bauxite.
The joint venture, Landaya Gold, was established under a memorandum of understanding signed by the two companies in March and is headquartered in Conakry. The venture will assess prospective gold-bearing areas, undertake exploration activities and evaluate opportunities for potential mine development, the companies said.
Guinea is the world’s largest producer of bauxite, the principal ore used to produce aluminium, and its mining industry has historically been heavily concentrated on the commodity. Expanding gold production would give the country a broader mineral base and potentially create additional sources of export revenue and investment.
For Resolute Mining, the partnership provides another platform for expanding its presence in West Africa. The Australian-listed company operates the Syama gold mine in Mali and the Mako mine in Senegal, while also developing the Doropo project in Côte d’Ivoire.
Resolute said the Guinea partnership forms part of its broader growth strategy in the region, where the company is seeking to expand its portfolio of gold assets.
The joint venture also reflects Guinea’s efforts to attract investment into its gold sector while increasing local participation in mineral development. Nimba Mining Gold Managing Director Patrice L’Huillier said the partnership would help strengthen local expertise and generate long-term value for the Guinean state and surrounding communities.
The companies have not disclosed the potential scale, investment value or development timeline for the projects to be assessed through Landaya Gold.
The partnership will initially focus on identifying and evaluating prospective gold areas. Any decision to advance individual projects towards development will depend on exploration results, economic assessments and the necessary regulatory approvals.
For Guinea, successful development of new gold resources could support the government’s broader objective of diversifying mining revenues and increasing the domestic economic benefits generated by the country’s mineral wealth.
