CAIRO, July 31 – Egypt has secured alternative energy supplies to meet domestic demand after a drone attack damaged a gas vessel at Damietta Port, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said, as authorities moved to minimise disruptions to the country’s electricity and gas supply.

Speaking on Thursday, Madbouly said the government had activated contingency measures to ensure energy supplies remain stable following the incident.

Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi said Egypt’s gas import infrastructure provides sufficient flexibility to manage the disruption. According to him, the country currently operates four Floating Storage Regasification Units (FSRUs), alongside a fifth vessel stationed at Jordan’s Aqaba Port, which is jointly shared by Egypt and Jordan.

The additional regasification capacity is expected to strengthen Egypt’s ability to import and process liquefied natural gas (LNG), helping maintain fuel supplies for power generation and industrial consumption.

Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat said electricity demand has remained at peak levels of between 37 gigawatts and 39 gigawatts over the past 15 days, reflecting increased seasonal consumption.

According to Esmat, the government has sufficient reserves of alternative fuels to support electricity generation.

He said more than 425,000 metric tonnes of fuel oil are currently available at power plants, with additional strategic reserves also in storage to safeguard energy security.

Authorities have not identified those responsible for the attack.

According to Esmat, no party has claimed responsibility for the drone strike, adding that investigations into the incident remain ongoing.

The attack highlights the growing importance of energy infrastructure security across the region as Egypt continues efforts to strengthen its gas import capacity and ensure reliable electricity supplies during periods of peak demand.
