ABIDJAN, Sept 1 – Spiro has appointed automotive executive Auroasish Choudhuri as Managing Director for West and Central Africa, as the electric motorcycle and battery-swapping company expands its mobility business across the continent.

Choudhuri will oversee Spiro’s mobility operations in both regions and report to Kaushik Burman, the company’s Chief Executive Officer of Mobility, Spiro said in a statement on Monday.

The appointment follows a $270 million fundraising round completed by Spiro in June and comes as the company reshapes its leadership. Former Indofast Energy CEO Anant Badjatya was appointed Group CEO, while Burman moved to lead the mobility services business, separating rider-facing operations from Spiro’s plans around battery swapping, energy infrastructure, logistics and vehicle manufacturing.

Badjatya said Choudhuri’s experience in growing automotive businesses across different markets would support Spiro’s expansion plans.

Choudhuri joins Spiro from DAG Industries, an automotive and industrial company where he served as CEO and managed operations in Nigeria and Benin. Before that, he spent more than 10 years with Indian two-wheeler manufacturer TVS Motor Company, where he was Regional Business Head for Asia and later Latin America.

Earlier in his career, he led international sales and business development at Escorts Limited across the United States, Latin America, West Asia and Sri Lanka. His experience covers sales, business development and market expansion.

At Spiro, Choudhuri will use that experience as the company expands its mobility operations and enters new markets.

“Africa is entering an exciting new phase in the transformation of mobility,” Choudhuri said, adding that he plans to combine his automotive experience with his knowledge of West African markets to support Spiro’s growth and expand access to affordable and sustainable mobility.

Spiro’s business extends beyond electric motorcycle sales. The company is building an electric mobility network around its motorcycles, supported by battery-swapping stations that allow riders to replace depleted batteries with charged ones.

The company assembles vehicles in Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda and operates a battery recycling facility in Nigeria. It also has operations in Benin, Togo and Cameroon, while Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo have previously been identified as expansion markets.

Spiro acquired UK-based two-wheeler engineering specialist Coexlion in May as it moves further into vehicle development and manufacturing. The company is also working to build the infrastructure and supply chains needed to operate its battery-swapping model at scale.

Choudhuri’s appointment adds an executive with experience expanding automotive businesses across several international markets to lead that effort in West and Central Africa.
