YAOUNDE, July 24 – Dangote Group is considering the construction of a petroleum products storage facility in Cameroon as it looks to strengthen fuel distribution across Central Africa and create another outlet for products from its refinery.
The proposal was discussed on Tuesday during a meeting between Dangote Group Vice President for Oil, Gas and Fertilisers, Devakumar Edwin, and Cameroon’s Prime Minister, Joseph Dion Ngute.
Although the project is still at the discussion stage, the company said the planned depot could be connected to a pipeline network, making it easier to move refined products across the country and into neighbouring markets. No investment value or timeline has been announced.
According to Edwin, the project is expected to improve fuel supply security in Cameroon by reducing the risk of shortages and supply disruptions. He added that transporting products through pipelines would also lower transport costs and reduce the environmental impact compared with other delivery methods.
If approved, the facility would provide another export destination for products from the 650,000-barrel-per-day Dangote refinery while supporting the group’s expansion into key trade corridors across Central Africa.
The latest proposal builds on Dangote Group’s growth plans for Cameroon. In 2021, following a meeting with President Paul Biya, Group President and Chief Executive Officer Aliko Dangote said the company intended to expand its operations in the country beyond its existing cement business.
The proposed storage facility would mark another step in that strategy if discussions lead to a final investment decision.
