Meta Adds Conversation Focus and Spotify Features to AI Smart Glasses

MENLO PARK, Dec 17 – Meta announced a new software update for its AI smart glasses that introduces a conversation focus feature designed to help users hear people more clearly in noisy environments.

The update will initially be available on Ray Ban Meta and Oakley Meta HSTN smart glasses in the United States and Canada, the company said on Tuesday.

First unveiled at Meta’s Connect conference earlier this year, the conversation focus feature uses the glasses’ open ear speakers to amplify the voice of the person the wearer is speaking with. Users can adjust the level of voice amplification by swiping the right temple of the glasses or through device settings, allowing customization based on surroundings such as restaurants, bars, commuter trains or crowded venues.

Meta said the feature aims to improve everyday communication, though its real world effectiveness will become clearer as more users test it.

Alongside this update, Meta is introducing a new Spotify integration that lets users play music based on what they are currently viewing. For example, looking at an album cover could trigger a song by that artist, while viewing a holiday scene could prompt festive music.

While more playful in nature, the Spotify feature highlights Meta’s vision of linking visual context with actions across apps.

Similar concepts already exist in the market. Apple’s AirPods include a Conversation Boost feature, and newer Pro models support clinical grade hearing aid functionality.

The conversation focus feature is currently limited to the U.S. and Canada. The Spotify visual playback feature is available in English across a wider range of markets, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The update, labeled software version 21, will first roll out to users enrolled in Meta’s Early Access Program before becoming available more broadly.
