ADDIS ABABA, Oct 6 – Ethiopia’s central bank has allocated $840 million for foreign exchange auctions during the second quarter of the 2026/27 fiscal year, as authorities continue to use market-based mechanisms to provide foreign currency.
The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) said the funds will be released through six separate auction rounds, with auctions scheduled every two weeks beginning October 13.
The programme will spread the planned foreign exchange allocation across the quarter, providing eligible market participants with regular opportunities to access foreign currency through the auction system.
The central bank announced the schedule in a statement on Tuesday but did not provide further details on the amount to be offered in each auction.
The latest allocation comes as Ethiopia continues to develop its foreign exchange market and increase the role of market-based mechanisms in determining access to foreign currency.
