ALGIERS, April 15 – Algeria has awarded a new prospecting authorization to BP Plc in its eastern basin, as the government moves to accelerate exploration in underdeveloped energy regions.
The permit, issued by National Agency for the Valorization of Hydrocarbon Resources, allows BP to conduct preliminary exploration activities, including seismic surveys and geological studies, to assess resource potential. It does not cover drilling or production, which require separate approvals.
The authorization forms part of Algeria’s broader strategy to enhance its investment appeal and unlock new hydrocarbon opportunities across its vast territory. The country’s mining domain spans more than 1.7 million square kilometers, much of it still underexplored.
ALNAFT said the initiative will leverage advanced exploration technologies to improve understanding of subsurface resources in the eastern basin and evaluate its long-term energy potential.
BP’s renewed presence is seen as a signal of strengthening investor confidence in Algeria’s upstream sector and regulatory framework, as the North African producer seeks to attract international capital and expertise.
