LAGOS, Aug 20 – EDECS Group has secured a strategic contract from DP World to redevelop seven operational yards at Terminal 1 of Dar es Salaam Port, expanding the companies’ partnership as Tanzania invests in infrastructure to strengthen its position as a regional logistics hub.

The project covers seven cargo and material-handling yards spanning 90,000 square metres, alongside new gates, utilities and supporting infrastructure. Construction is already underway, with EDECS responsible for design and delivery of the facilities.

The redevelopment includes infrastructure to support digital yard-management systems, improved cargo storage and handling capabilities and engineering measures aimed at strengthening operational efficiency and long-term resilience. EDECS is also installing a port-wide fire protection network and high-mast lighting system covering the wider port area to improve safety, security and operational performance.

Dar es Salaam Port is Tanzania’s largest maritime gateway and handles more than 90% of the country’s international maritime trade. Its strategic importance extends beyond Tanzania, with the port serving as a key access point for seven landlocked countries across East and Central Africa.

The expansion comes as cargo volumes through the port continue to rise. Dar es Salaam has surpassed 30 million tonnes in annual throughput, reflecting growing demand for transport and logistics capacity across the wider region.

Terminal 1 has also recorded a significant increase in container handling. Monthly throughput reached 46,582 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in July 2026, compared with 13,779 TEUs in May 2024, making July the terminal’s highest monthly container volume on record.

The increase highlights the potential impact of ongoing investments in port infrastructure and operational systems as Tanzania seeks to improve trade connectivity and build logistics capacity in line with its Vision 2050 ambitions.

EDECS Chairman and Managing Director Hussein El Dessouky said the company was pleased to extend its relationship with DP World through the project.

“We are proud to extend our partnership with DP World through the Dar es Salaam Port Modernization Project, a development of strategic importance to Tanzania and the region,” El Dessouky said.

He added that construction teams were progressing across key operational areas and that the project would deliver infrastructure intended to support safer and more efficient port operations. He also linked the development to Tanzania’s broader efforts to strengthen trade connectivity and economic growth.

Martin Jacob, CEO of DP World Dar es Salaam, said the terminal’s modernisation remained central to improving trade connectivity and logistics efficiency across East and Central Africa.

“The modernization of DP World terminal at Dar es Salaam Port remains central to efforts to enhance trade connectivity and logistics efficiency across East and Central Africa,” Jacob said. “Building on our relationship with EDECS Group, we are pleased to recognize the speed of execution in civil work.”

The project forms part of a broader shift towards technology-enabled port operations and increased logistics capacity across East Africa. As trade volumes rise, modern storage, handling, safety and digital infrastructure will become increasingly important to reducing bottlenecks and improving the movement of goods through Tanzania.

For DP World, the redevelopment strengthens its operational footprint at one of the region’s most strategically important ports. For EDECS, the contract adds to its portfolio of marine and logistics infrastructure projects across Africa and the Middle East.

The continued expansion of Dar es Salaam Port is also significant for regional trade, particularly for landlocked economies that depend on East African maritime corridors. Improvements in the port’s capacity and efficiency could therefore have implications beyond Tanzania by supporting wider supply chains and strengthening connections between coastal and inland markets.
