Morocco January Inflation Mixed as Monthly Prices Rise, Annual Rate Falls

RABAT, Feb 23 – Morocco’s consumer prices increased in January from the previous month but declined from a year earlier, according to the High Commission for Planning (HCP).

The Consumer Price Index rose 0.3% in January 2026 from December 2025, with food prices up 0.8% and non-food items down 0.1%.

Fish and seafood prices jumped 10.4%, vegetables rose 2.7%, fruit gained 0.7%, meat increased 0.4%, and coffee, tea and cocoa edged up 0.2%.

Oils and fats fell 3.1% while milk, cheese and eggs declined 0.3%, partly offsetting the rise in food costs.

Fuel prices dropped 5.9%, weighing on the non-food category.

Beni-Mellal recorded the largest monthly increase at 1.5%, followed by Settat and Al Hoceima at 0.7% and Guelmim and Safi at 0.6%.

Marrakech rose 0.5%, Agadir gained 0.4%, while Casablanca, Tetouan and Meknes each increased 0.3%.

Prices fell in Dakhla by 0.3%, Tangier by 0.2% and Fez by 0.1%.

On a yearly basis, consumer prices declined 0.8% in January compared with the same month in 2025.

Food prices fell 2.1% year-on-year while non-food prices rose 0.4%.

Transport costs decreased 2.9% and miscellaneous goods and services increased 2.8%.

Core inflation was unchanged from December but fell 1.2% from a year earlier, the HCP said.
