ACCRA, Aug 21 – Brazilian state-owned energy giant Petrobras has submitted an expression of interest for four offshore exploration blocks in Ghana’s Keta Basin and begun negotiations with the government, marking a new step in its international exploration strategy.

Petrobras said Ghana’s Ministry of Energy and Green Transition approved its application to negotiate exploration contracts for the four blocks. The approval moves the company into direct discussions with the Ghanaian authorities over the terms and conditions governing potential exploration activities.

The Keta Basin is an offshore frontier area on Ghana’s eastern coast, and Petrobras’ interest forms part of a broader strategy to identify new sources of oil and natural gas as the company works to replenish its reserves.

According to Petrobras, the Ghana opportunity is consistent with its plans to explore new frontier areas both in Brazil and internationally. The company is also assessing opportunities that could diversify its exploration portfolio and support longer-term growth.

The move comes as Petrobras continues to pursue additional exploration opportunities following recent activity in Brazil. The company has sought to expand its resource base through exploration in areas with potential to contribute to future oil and gas production.

For Ghana, Petrobras’ entry into negotiations could bring additional international expertise and investment interest to the country’s offshore exploration sector. The outcome will depend on the terms eventually agreed between the company and the Ghanaian government, as well as the results of any subsequent exploration activity.

Petrobras said its international exploration efforts are aimed at strengthening its reserves, diversifying its portfolio and supporting the long-term sustainability of its business. The Ghana negotiations therefore represent an early-stage opportunity rather than confirmation of a commercial discovery or future production.
