LAGOS, June 29 – Nigeria’s Eko Electricity Distribution Plc (EKEDP) lost power supply from the national grid on Sunday afternoon, causing a widespread blackout across its electricity distribution network in Lagos.
In a statement posted on its official X account, the company said the outage began at 1:49 p.m. on June 28 and was caused by a transmission level incident outside its control.
EKEDP said it is working with the relevant authorities to determine the cause of the disruption and establish when electricity supply can be restored. The company added that it will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
The outage affected customers across its franchise area, including Lagos Island, Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lekki, Ajah, Ibeju Lekki, Apapa, Mushin, Festac, Satellite Town, Ojo, Badagry and Agbara.
As one of Nigeria’s electricity distribution companies, EKEDP relies entirely on power supplied through the national grid. It does not generate electricity, meaning any interruption in grid supply immediately cuts off power across its network.
The company is estimated to receive between 11% and 15% of the electricity delivered through Nigeria’s national grid. When grid supply falls to zero, customers served by the utility experience a complete blackout until transmission is restored.
Power disruptions linked to the national grid have remained a recurring challenge in Nigeria’s electricity sector. In March 2024, a nationwide grid collapse also interrupted electricity supply across EKEDP’s coverage areas before power was gradually restored.
EKEDP apologised for the disruption and thanked customers for their patience while efforts to restore normal electricity supply continue.
