BAMAKO, April 27 – Mali’s Defence Minister Sadio Camara has died after an attack on his residence, marking one of the most significant high-level casualties in the country’s ongoing insurgency.
According to government officials, a suicide attacker drove an explosives-laden vehicle into Camara’s home in Kati, a key military hub located about 15 kilometers from the capital Bamako. The blast triggered an exchange of gunfire, during which the minister was wounded and later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
Authorities have declared two days of national mourning following the incident.
The attack formed part of a broader wave of coordinated assaults carried out across multiple مناطق in Mali. Insurgent groups, including Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, reportedly worked alongside Tuareg-led factions such as the Azawad Liberation Front to strike several targets simultaneously.
The operations hit locations near Bamako’s airport as well as northern and central مناطق including Mopti, Sévaré, and Gao. Officials have yet to release a confirmed death toll, though the government acknowledged both civilian and military casualties.
Security analysts and diplomats described the attack as one of the most extensive coordinated offensives in Mali in recent years, underscoring the growing capabilities of insurgent networks in the Sahel.
The status of Kidal, a strategically important northern city, remains uncertain. The Azawad Liberation Front claimed control of the area and indicated that an arrangement had been reached to allow foreign fighters, including Russian mercenaries, to withdraw from a besieged position.
However, Mali’s military leadership disputed that account. Army chief General Oumar Diarra said forces had carried out a tactical redeployment and that operations in the area were continuing.
The United Nations has condemned the attacks and called for a stronger international response to escalating violence across the Sahel region, where militant activity has intensified in recent years.
The killing of a senior government figure highlights the persistent security challenges facing Mali’s leadership, even as authorities continue efforts to stabilize the country amid a complex web of insurgent threats.
