JOHANNESBURG, May 8 – Citigroup has appointed André Ross as its country officer and banking head in South Africa, strengthening its leadership team in one of Africa’s largest financial markets.
Ross joins Citi from JPMorgan Chase, where he served as managing director and head of global corporate banking for sub-Saharan Africa. He succeeds Peter Taylor as the bank’s top executive in South Africa.
In a statement on Thursday, Citi said Ross would serve as the lead executive for its South African operations and highlighted his more than two decades of experience across corporate investment banking and development finance.
Before joining JPMorgan, Ross held senior roles at Barclays and Absa Group.
The appointment comes amid heightened competition for senior banking talent in South Africa’s financial sector. Recent months have seen several high-profile executive moves across major institutions, including leadership changes involving Deutsche Bank, Absa and Standard Bank.
Absa recently recruited multiple senior dealmakers from Standard Bank, including Zaid Moola, who now leads its corporate and investment banking division, and Musa Motloung, who was appointed group strategic risk officer.
Citi described South Africa as a strategic hub for its sub-Saharan African operations, underscoring the importance of the market to the US lender’s regional expansion plans.
The bank said its operations in South Africa date back to 1920 and described itself as the country’s largest foreign bank.
Ross is expected to bring experience spanning both corporate and public-sector banking, with expertise in strategy, client coverage and regional financial markets.
