Lagos Ride Hailing Drivers Begin Three Day Strike Over Fares, Rising Costs

by Oluebube Elechi

LAGOS, Mar 16 – Ride hailing drivers operating on Uber, Bolt, inDrive and Lagride platforms in Lagos have begun a three day strike over what they describe as poor working conditions and unsustainable fares.

The Lagos chapter of the Amalgamated Union of App Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) announced the industrial action on Sunday during a press briefing in the state.

According to the union’s Public Relations Officer, Steven Iwindoye, drivers are facing rising operational costs including higher fuel prices, vehicle maintenance, inflation and increasing living expenses.

He said fare structures and policies of ride hailing companies have not been adjusted to reflect these economic realities, leaving many drivers struggling to earn sustainable income despite long working hours.

During the three day strike, drivers across Lagos are expected to log off from all ride hailing platforms including Uber, Bolt, inDrive and Lagride.

The union said the action is intended to push for reforms in the app based transport sector and demand fairer economic conditions for drivers providing transport services across the city.

AUATON also said it has submitted ten demands to ride hailing companies and relevant government authorities. These include an immediate review of fares to reflect current fuel prices, maintenance costs and inflation, as well as a reduction in commissions charged by the platforms.

Other demands include the introduction of a regulated minimum base fare, improved rider verification systems, emergency panic buttons for drivers and comprehensive accident, health and life insurance coverage while drivers are active on the platforms.

The union said it will assess responses from companies and government authorities after the three day shutdown to determine the next course of action.
