LAGOS, Aug 28 – The family office of Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest person, is preparing to significantly expand its operations in 2027 as the billionaire’s family develops a central investment and governance platform for his business interests and long-term wealth preservation.
Halima Dangote, who is overseeing the initiative, said the family office is expected to become more visible from the first quarter of next year. “By the first quarter of next year, you will start to see the presence of the family office,” Halima said in a Bloomberg TV interview in Lagos. She said the platform will focus on governance, capital management and philanthropy, with the broader objective of ensuring the family’s business interests remain sustainable across generations.
The family’s stated ambition extends well beyond conventional succession planning. Halima said the goal is for the business to survive for eight to 10 generations, giving the initiative a much longer horizon than the typical corporate planning cycle.
From Industrial Conglomerate to Multigenerational Institution
The family office is based in Dubai and is being established as the Dangote Group prepares to manage capital, ownership and succession on a more formal institutional basis.
The development comes as the Dangote Group, which generates about $20 billion in annual revenue, continues to operate across major sectors including cement, sugar, salt, fertiliser, oil and gas.
Founded by Dangote approximately 45 years ago as a commodities trading business, the group has grown into one of Africa’s largest industrial conglomerates.
The family office is also aligned with the group’s Vision 2030 strategy, which seeks to strengthen governance while targeting a fivefold increase in annual revenue to $100 billion.
The move places the Dangote family among a growing number of wealthy Nigerian families establishing dedicated family offices to manage investments, preserve wealth and prepare for succession across generations.
Next Generation Takes Greater Role
The expansion of the family office follows an internal restructuring earlier this year that elevated Dangote’s three daughters into senior positions within the wider business empire.
Mariya Dangote, the eldest, oversees operations across the group’s food businesses while also leading commercial strategy within the cement business. Fatima Dangote, the youngest, is responsible for sales across the refinery and fertiliser operations.
The changes reflect a broader effort to give the next generation greater responsibility as the conglomerate moves toward a more institutional governance structure.
For Halima, however, the family office is not solely a mechanism for transferring control from one generation to another. It is intended to create an investment platform capable of connecting the Dangote family’s capital and interests with opportunities beyond the group’s traditional African markets.
Dubai Base to Connect Africa With Global Markets
Although the Dangote Group’s operating footprint remains concentrated in Africa, Halima said the family office will have a broader international orientation.
The Dubai-based platform is expected to serve as a bridge between Africa and major investment markets in the Middle East, Asia and Europe. It will also pursue Sharia-compliant investment opportunities while supporting the family’s broader objective of contributing to Africa’s industrialisation.
Halima emphasised that the initiative is being developed as a collective family effort rather than a project controlled by a single member. “My sisters, my dad, the lawyers, all of us are involved,” she said.
The development signals a shift in the Dangote family’s approach from building businesses to building an institutional framework designed to preserve, govern and deploy family capital over multiple generations.
With operations expected to ramp up from 2027, the family office could become an increasingly important vehicle for managing the next phase of the Dangote family’s investment strategy, succession planning and global expansion.
