ABU DHABI, April 19 – Etihad Airways has unveiled a major expansion into Africa, launching six new routes that will significantly strengthen connectivity between the continent and global markets.
The new destinations include Accra, Asmara, Kinshasa, Lubumbashi, Lagos and Harare, all linked to Abu Dhabi as part of the airline’s broader global growth strategy.
The move reflects rising demand for air connectivity across Africa, driven by expanding trade, investment flows and population growth. It also strengthens Abu Dhabi’s position as a key hub connecting Africa with Asia, India and the Middle East.
According to CEO Antonoaldo Neves, the expansion targets high-growth markets where demand for passenger and cargo capacity is outpacing supply, particularly in trade-driven sectors.
The initiative aligns with deepening economic ties between the UAE and African countries across industries such as energy, mining, infrastructure and logistics. It also complements Etihad’s partnership with Ethiopian Airlines, further enhancing intra-African connectivity.
Each new route will enable one-stop connections from Africa to major global markets, including China, India and Southeast Asia, improving access for both travelers and businesses.
Cargo is expected to play a central role, with Etihad Cargo providing freight capacity tailored to sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and pharmaceuticals, where efficient logistics are critical.
The expansion positions Abu Dhabi as a strategic gateway linking two of the world’s fastest-growing regions, while enhancing Africa’s integration into global trade networks.
