Turkey, Ethiopia Sign Energy and Economic Cooperation Agreements

ANKARA, Feb 18 – Turkey and Ethiopia signed multiple agreements on energy, trade and technical cooperation in Addis Ababa on Tuesday during a visit by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, his first trip to Ethiopia in 11 years.

The signing followed talks between Erdogan and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed at the National Palace.

The Turkish Energy Ministry said both sides signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of energy. Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar and Ethiopia’s Minister of Water and Energy Habtamu Itefa formalized the agreement.

The ministry said the memorandum will serve as a roadmap for joint production and projects. It covers renewable energy development, energy efficiency, hydroelectric power plant equipment, electric turbines and electricity transmission. The agreement also includes technical knowledge sharing.

In addition, Bayraktar and Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Gedion Timothewos signed the Türkiye–Ethiopia Economic, Trade and Technical Cooperation Joint Economic Commission protocol. Officials said the protocol will strengthen institutional coordination and support trade diversification and investment in infrastructure, manufacturing, agriculture and construction.

Turkish officials said energy cooperation could include joint feasibility studies, training programs and private sector participation in power generation and distribution projects. Discussions also addressed potential collaboration in solar and wind energy.

Turkey and Ethiopia reaffirmed their commitment to deepen bilateral cooperation across agreed sectors at the conclusion of the ceremony.
