ABUJA, Feb 26 – Nigeria and Sweden are moving to deepen bilateral ties with a focus on developing investment-ready projects across energy, infrastructure and the digital economy, officials said after talks in Abuja.
Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, said the government is prioritising projects that can attract private capital and meet international standards. He spoke during a meeting with Sweden’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Anna Westerholm.
Bagudu said Nigeria aims to strengthen private sector-led growth in key sectors including power, water resources and technology. He added that the government will support project preparation to improve investment readiness and align with its broader economic agenda.
The talks also covered cooperation in capacity building, climate-related initiatives and technological innovation. Nigerian officials said these areas are central to long-term economic planning and infrastructure development.
Westerholm said Sweden is looking to expand its engagement by offering technical expertise and structured support for projects that meet global benchmarks. She noted that the goal is to translate cooperation into commercially viable investments.
The discussions build on more than six decades of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Sweden. Officials from both sides indicated that new agreements are being considered to formalise cooperation across infrastructure, energy and digital innovation.
The renewed engagement reflects a broader effort by Nigeria to attract foreign investment into priority sectors while strengthening partnerships that support economic diversification and long-term growth.
