JOHANNESBERG, Mar 4 – Chery Automobile said it will introduce its iCAUR V23 electric sports utility vehicle brand in South Africa in May, as the company expands into new markets to drive sales growth.

The planned launch marks Chery’s entry into South Africa with a standalone electric vehicle brand. The company is increasing its presence in emerging markets as competition in the electric vehicle segment grows, according to a company statement.

South Africa remains the most developed automotive market on the continent, although electric vehicle adoption is still low. However, policy support and rising consumer interest are beginning to support demand for electric vehicles.

At present, about 21 Chinese car brands operate in South Africa, showing rising competition in the sector. Additional brands are expected to enter the market this year, including models from BYD under its Denza line, as well as new offerings from Chery Group.
