CAIRO, April 7 – Italian energy firm Eni has announced a major gas and condensate discovery offshore Egypt following the drilling of the Denise W-1 exploration well in the Temsah concession in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Preliminary estimates suggest the field holds around 2 trillion cubic feet of gas in place, alongside approximately 130 million barrels of associated condensates, marking a significant addition to Egypt’s hydrocarbon resources.
The discovery comes at a critical time for Egypt, where domestic gas production has declined in recent years, increasing reliance on imports. The country has also faced added pressure on its energy sector from global disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions.
Eni said the find could play a key role in supporting Egypt’s efforts to rebuild gas reserves and boost output. The location of the discovery, about 70 kilometers offshore and close to existing infrastructure, is expected to enable faster and more cost-efficient development.
The Denise field is operated by Eni with a 50% stake in partnership with BP, with operations carried out through Petrobel, a joint venture with Egypt’s state-owned Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation.
The well was drilled under a concession agreement renewed in 2025, giving the partners a 20-year horizon to develop resources in the area.
The discovery highlights ongoing investment in the Eastern Mediterranean’s energy sector and reinforces Egypt’s position as a regional gas hub, even as it navigates supply constraints and rising domestic demand.
