CAIRO, July 15 – Egypt has procured nearly 4.9 million tonnes of wheat since the start of its 2026 procurement season, bringing the country close to achieving its target of purchasing 5 million tonnes from local farmers.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced the latest procurement figure on Wednesday as the government continues efforts to build strategic grain reserves and strengthen domestic food security.
Egypt’s annual wheat procurement season runs from mid-April to mid-August, during which the government purchases grain from local producers to support national food supplies and reduce dependence on imported wheat.
As one of the world’s largest wheat importers, Egypt relies on a combination of domestic procurement and international purchases to meet demand for subsidised bread and other staple food products.
With several weeks remaining before the procurement season concludes, the country appears on track to achieve its 5 million-tonne target, reinforcing efforts to enhance food security amid continued volatility in global grain markets.
