JOHANNESBURG, Oct 22 – Chinese automaker Chery plans to begin manufacturing its Omoda C4 crossover SUV in South Africa in 2027, marking a significant step in its efforts to expand production and exports across African markets.

The company said on October 21 that the model would be available in petrol, hybrid and fully electric versions when it launches locally next year, according to Reuters. Production will take place at the former Nissan manufacturing plant in Rosslyn, near Pretoria, which Chery acquired in 2026.

Chery expects production to reach 15,000 vehicles during the initial ramp-up phase in the third and fourth quarters of 2027, before eventually increasing annual output to 50,000 units, Reuters reported.

The investment comes as Chinese automakers expand overseas manufacturing to diversify their markets amid slowing growth and intensifying competition in China. South Africa’s established automotive industry, supplier network and access to regional export markets make it an important destination for manufacturers seeking a larger presence on the continent.

Chery Targets South Africa as a Manufacturing and Export Hub

Chery intends to use the Rosslyn facility as a base for vehicle manufacturing, exports and research and development across Africa. The company is also introducing a localisation programme aimed at developing domestic suppliers and increasing the proportion of locally sourced components used in production.

The Omoda C4 will lead a broader manufacturing programme at the plant. Other vehicles are expected to follow, including models under Chery’s Jetour brand. South African automotive publication Mail & Guardian has also reported that the planned lineup includes the Chery Grootman pickup.

Acquiring the former Nissan facility gives Chery access to an established manufacturing site rather than requiring the company to construct a new factory from scratch. The strategy could also support the development of local automotive supply chains as production volumes increase.

South Africa is the continent’s second-largest automotive manufacturing hub, positioning it as a potential production and distribution base for international manufacturers targeting African markets.

Omoda C4 Brings Multiple Powertrain Options

The Omoda C4 is a B-segment crossover SUV featuring angular exterior styling, concealed LED headlights and a minimalist interior centred on touchscreen controls.

Its technology features include an artificial intelligence voice assistant, a 540-degree camera system and Level 2+ driver-assistance systems. The availability of petrol, hybrid and fully electric versions will give Chery multiple powertrain options for the South African market.

The planned 2027 launch places the model within a broader expansion of Chinese automotive brands in overseas markets, where manufacturers are seeking new customers and additional production capacity beyond China.

South Africa’s Automotive Market Attracts Further Investment

South Africa’s automotive market was valued at US$15.2 billion in 2025, according to IMARC Group, which projects that it will reach US$23.7 billion by 2034. The forecast implies a compound annual growth rate of 4.93% between 2026 and 2034.

The market is attracting investment from Chinese manufacturers seeking to strengthen their regional presence. Companies including BYD and Great Wall Motor are also exploring or expanding overseas manufacturing as they pursue growth outside their domestic market.

For Chery, the Rosslyn investment provides an opportunity to combine local production with export ambitions and supplier development. Its planned expansion from an initial output of 15,000 vehicles towards 50,000 units annually will be an important indicator of the facility’s production ramp-up and the scale of its longer-term commitment to South Africa.
